Bruno Reviews Not at Borat-like Hype

bruno reviews

Any Bruno review has one of these two words in it: Bruno reviews start with "hilarious" or "offensive" Bruno reviews let people know what they are in for, even if a review disagrees on how funny the offensive stuff is. Bruno reviews disagree with that a little more than the ones for

Borat did, so Sacha Baron Cohen may have taken a step back with Bruno. But even some negative Bruno reviews still call it the funniest film of the year - and it is certainly the most offensive film of the year.

Sacha Baron Cohen made the world laugh until they were literally sick with Borat, as the crude, racist, mockumentary that made fun of real-life racists became a world wide phenomenon. Bruno injects the same formula into the debate over homosexuality, as Cohen's latest creation, swishy Austrian fashion journalist Bruno, pushes his interview subjects into looking like gay-bashing bigots.

When Borat came out, the hype and marketing push was so overwhelming, reviews fell into line and hailed Cohen and Borat as comedy genius. For Bruno, the hype is a little less sweeping, as people are now a little more used to Cohen's formula and routine - though not when they're being interviewed for the mockumentary.

Every Bruno review agrees that the movie is sick, maybe more so than Borat. Cohen pushes people's stomachs to the limit with scenes featuring talking penises, Bruno propositioning Ron Paul for gay sex, Bruno having live gay sex in front of a cage match crowd in Arkansas that wants to murder him, and much more.

The message of Bruno is simple - no matter how crazy and graphic Bruno's homosexuality is, anyone who objects even the slightest bit is a homophobic hate-monger, even if they don't want to kill him like that Arkansas crowd. Bruno reviews are a little bit more divided this time as to how funny Cohen makes his social messages, not so much in how outrageous they are.

Rotten Tomatoes gives Bruno a fair 73% rating of positive reviews. However, that is less positive than Borat, and the average Rotten Tomatoes rating is only a 6.5 out of 10. Some negative reviews say that Cohen's formula has already gotten old, that it is more sick than funny, and that

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus still reads "Crude and offensive, but with ample cultural insight and gut-busting laughs, Bruno is another outlandish and entertaining mockumentary from Sacha Baron Cohen"

The Bruno reviews don't turn against Cohen, or suggest that he has lost his edge. Bruno is still likely to make a lot of money and spark a lot of cultural debate, before Harry Potter comes calling next week.

But since there are a bit more negative reviews to be found in Bruno, Cohen may not have the kind of game-changing phenomenon that Borat was, even if it is more extreme.
