In his session with Netherlands Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende on Tuesday morning, President Barack Obama thanked the Dutch for their “critical” role in the war in Afghanistan, according to a pool reporter.

“The threat of terrorism is at least as high in Europe, and we have a common interest,” Obama said in a pool spray with the prime minister, whose country has about 2,000 troops in Afghanistan and has sustained 19 casualties.

Obama also invited Balkenende to participate in the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh.

“We discussed the issue of Guantanamo, ... and we discussed the issue of climate change,” Obama said. “Overall, we think this partnership is strong and will continue to grow.”

U.S. Marines from the 2nd MEB, 1st Battalion 5th Marines are seen shortly after waking up inside a compound where they stayed for the night, in the Nawa district of Afghanistan's Helmand province, July 8.
