In an unprecedented decision, the FOTA teams in Formula One have given the Ferrari team permission to allow Michael Schumacher to test in their 2009 race car. The decision to allow the legendary former champion was surprising in two ways. The first is that according to the 2009 rules, all testing during the season has been completely banned. The second surprise facet of the decision is the F1 teams are in a long summer break in between races, the next race is not until August 23, and the rules this year stipulate that all teams must completely shut down their racing operations for 2 weeks during this period. (even the phones and lights are supposed to be off)

FOTA Chairman and Toyota F1 boss John Howett told SPEEDtv.com: ‘I believe all FOTA teams have agreed to accept their request. The situation for Felipe is very unfortunate, and this is a sporting gesture which we are confident Ferrari will respect.’ FILE - This July 16 2009 file photo shows former F1 driver Michael Schumacher, during a Kart event at the South Garda Karting track in Lonato, Italy. Superman Returns

Schumacher has been driving a 2007 Ferrari race car in preparation for his stunning return to F1.

"A great feeling to be back in an F1 car," Schumi said . "After a few laps, I was able to drive constant times and I am quite happy with the time I did.

"Now, we will have to see how my body and my muscles will react to that day in the next (few) days."

Sure seems like Michael keeps himself in good shape, and he also has been racing motorcycles, so his legendary reflexes should be ready as well.

He did wreck his bike back in February, but he obviously thinks he is completely recovered from that accident. Massa Going Home

Felipe Massa is continuing his recovery from his injuries, and will be heading home to Brazil by private plane on Sunday.

"His condition is appropriate, he does not have any serious neurological symptoms at the moment. I think the early phases of rehabilitation can start now," said an AEK hospital neurologist.

When told that Michael Schumacher was going to be his replacement driver, the affable Massa sure sounded like his old self-

"He talks a lot and is cracking jokes," his personal doctor Dino Altman said, Felipe even said (about Schumi) "We'll see if I let him drive my car!"

"Racing is all he can think of," Dr Altman added.

When Massa found out that Lewis Hamilton had won the Hungarian Grand Prix, and his Ferrari team mate Kimi Raikkonen was in second, he really sounded ready to be back-

Massa is said to have answered: "That was my race!"
