Buzz Aldrin celebrates the fortieth year of his moonwalk and historic space flight with the publication of Magnificent Desolation: The Long Journey Home from the Moon. The former astronaut will appear Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. at Chaucer's Bookstore, 3321 State St., Santa Barbara, Calif. Apollo 11's flight made Aldrin and Neil Armstrong -- the first man to walk on the moon -- famous.

More than space travel

In the book, Aldrin not only tells about the lunar landing, but he is candid about his personal life and its trials and glory. After such a triumph, he came back to an Air Force career stripped of purpose or direction other than as a public relations instrument. He fought depression and alcoholism, lost two marriages and ended up selling cars. The book takes readers full circle in Aldrin's life and shows what he learned in order to dedicate himself to the future of space exploration. The book is published by Harmony and co-authored with Ken Abraham.
