Jay-Z will make his first American festival appearance at All Points West in Jersey City on July 31, festival organizers announced late Wednesday. He is a nearly-last-minute replacement for the Beastie Boys, who said on Monday that they were canceling all their concert dates because one member of the group, Adam Yauch (a k a MCA), has cancer in his parotid gland and in a lymph node.

Jay-Z, the rap king who has come out of retirement more times than Michael Corleone, performed at a number of festivals in Europe last year, including Glastonbury in England and Roskilde in Denmark, but has not played a major American festival until now. The organizers of All Points West — a three-day event in Liberty State Park that also features Tool, Coldplay and dozens of other bands — said in their announcement that refunds “based on this news” will be available for the July 31 show only.
