Katie Holmes dance, results, a bust?

This week, with two weeks to go until the finale of “So You Think You Can Dance,” we saw Janette and Jason go home.

Say it ain’t so! Methinks America got it wrong.

Twitter (#sytycd) also is abuzz with upset fans over the Janette-Jason loss. Poor Evan, who made it through, also is getting hit with firebombs.

Listen to my podcast with studio guest Lisa Potts here.

More this week: Katie Holmes. She’s an actress, not a dancer and a singer. That’s true, and it’s also true that she danced and sang for charity on Thursday’s show. So is it fair that much of the Twitterverse is slamming her performance? Nigel Lythgoe said on Twitter: “I’m trying to figure out why Katie is being judged as a dancer. When a star throws out the opening pitch no-one says “ooh crap pitcher!”

Nigel, you are right, and we should applaud anyone willing to perform for charity.

But here’s the rub — her performance had been hyped not only several weeks on the show but also on Twitter by judges. By the time the show came, I believe fans were almost ready for the second coming. What we saw was an actress who gave an entertaining segment, but which backfired because of the hype. Next time, lower the thermostat on the hype.

BTW, Nigel Lythgoe asked twitter fans which dances they would like to see brought back. Here are two of my favorites from Season 5:

Katee and Twitch, “Mercy”

Katee and Joshua, “No Air”
